The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park has been
officially listed on the National Register of Historic Sites
since 1970. It is a microcosm of Florida farmland, marshland
and succeeding hammock and represents a history, culture and
architecture that typifies a rural Florida that has all but
vanished. Eight acres of the historic site have been managed
by DEP's Division of Recreation and parks since 1970. The
remaining 60 acres of the original homestead are managed by
Alachua County
Open to Public 9:00 – 5:00 pm daily; Guided Tours through
the historic house are also offered for a small fee. Tours
are offered October through July, Thursday through Sunday
at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. , and on every hour from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Guided tours are not offered Thanksgiving or Christmas (although
the grounds are open).

Take a peek at the largest collections based natural history
museum in the Southeast. On display is a full sized replica
of a North Florida limestone cave and a 14-foot mammoth skeleton,

Directions: From Interstate 75, take exit 75 and travel east
on State Road 24 (Archer Road). Turn north (left) on State
Road 121 (S.W. 34th Street). At the third traffic signal,
turn east (right) on Hull Road and travel 1/4 of a mile. The
entrance to the University of Florida Cultural Plaza is on
the south (right) side of Hull Road. From U.S. 441, travel
west on State Road 24 (Archer Road). Turn north (right) on
State Road 121 (S.W. 34th Street). At the third traffic signal,
turn east (right) on Hull Road and travel 1/4 of a mile. The
entrance to the University of Florida Cultural Plaza is on
the south (right) side of Hull Road.

The Harn Museum of Art, which opened to the public in 1990,
is one of the largest university art museums in the Southeastern
United States. Currently the Harn is expanding with the addition
of a new wing, the Mary Ann Harn Cofrin Pavilion. The Pavilion
will house exhibition space for sculpture, painting, video
and other media and will feature art classrooms and a bistro-style
café. As the physical facilities are growing, so are
the collections. Last year, 159 new works of art entered the
collection through donation and purchase, and in 2003 some
remarkable donations have enriched the Harn's holdings of
contemporary art.
Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday, 10:00
a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sunday, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. The Museum is closed
on Mondays and State holidays. The Museum Store is open during
museum hours.
Tours guided by Harn Museum docents are available Saturday
and Sunday at 2:00 pm. Guided and self-guided school and community
tours are offered by appointment with three week's notice.

Haile Homestead at Kanapaha Plantation

In 1854 Thomas Evans and Serena Chestnut Haile moved their
family from Camden, South Carolina to Gainesville, Florida
where they established a 1,500-acre Sea Island cotton plantation
they named Kanapaha. Completed in 1856 by enslaved craftsmen,
the 6,200 square foot manse is one of the few remaining antebellum
homes in North Central Florida. The Historic Haile Homestead
is unique for its "Talking Walls." The Haile family
and friends wrote on the walls of the home - all together
over 12,500 words.

Considered Gainesville's cultural center, the Thomas Center
is housed in a beautifully restored Mediterranean Revival-style
hotel. The Thomas Center is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places, and contains art galleries, 1920's period
rooms, local history exhibits, performance space, banquet
rooms, and meeting rooms. The Thomas Center is surrounded
by the lovely Thomas Center Gardens and the Grace and Sidney
Knight Children's Theatre. The center is the site of a variety
of art exhibits and musical programs.
Open to Public Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00
PM. The galleries are closed between shows and during observed
holidays.

Housed in the 1870 home of the first Clerk of Courts for Columbia
County, the museum includes a permanent exhibit gallery of
Columbia County and North Florida photography, a room devoted
to the history of the Civil War in North Florida, a small

exhibits collections both historical and art from local and
state contributors.

Considered by many of be one of the finest private museums
in the state, this repository of history is owned by three
brothers – Tommy, Ashley and Billy Beggs – owners
of Florida’s continuously-operated family business,
T,J, Beggs & Company. Among other attractions, there is
the original coffin shop exactly as it was in 1895. The museum
also exhibits a collection of funeral paraphernalia such as
Florida’s first motorized hearse, zinc-lined, iced coffins
and zip-on burial clothing.

This is a stately mansion that was built by William A. Hammerly
in 1860 for Benjamin F. Wardlaw. Both the National Register
of Historic Places and the Historic American Building Survey
recognize it as an example of classic revival architecture.
The house was used as a hospital after the Battle of Olustee,
near Lake City, in 1864. It was purchased by North Florida
Community College in 1988 and is now preserved and used as
a conference center for the six rural counties served by the
college.

farm complex. In 1983, Myrtle Dudley donated her family farm
to the Florida Park Service. Today, Dudley Farm presents a
living history working farm encompassing 325 of the Dudley’s
original 640 acres.

The importance of forestry in Florida dates back to the early
1800s, and Forest Capital Museum State Park celebrates the
timber that built Florida. The heart of the museum is dedicated
to long-leaf pines, which grow on the museum grounds, and
the 5,000 products manufactured from them. Experience the
life of rural families of the early south and learnt he importance
of forestry. The Cracker Homestead was contructed in 1863
by Whiley Whiddon during the Civil War.

The Camp Blanding Museum is dedicated to the nine Infantry
Divisions, including the 30th Infantry Division and the 508th
PIR, which trained here between 1940 and 1943. In 1943, Camp
Blanding became an IRTC, training men for both the European
and Pacific theaters. In 1945, the camp became a major Separation
Center.
Now Camp Blanding is embarking on a major expansion to honor
all who served in all the nation's 20th Century conflicts.
It will place special emphasis on the Florida National Guard
and the local businesses with whom Camp Blanding has had a
cordial relationship through all the years since World War
II.
